HIKARU: THE NEW DEAL (EP 26-30)

EPISODE 30

But a new big turning point of the anime is soon coming – what I personally consider the biggest of all: episode 30 and the discover of the poisoning injury. Like ep23 ("Destroy the dam", in which Daisuke reveals himself to Hikaru), this episode would have deserved, in my opinion, Araki’s design skills, but nevermind (the sakkan, or artist, was Toshio Mori). Keeping the attention focused on Hikaru, we can see in this episode an indirect prove of her strong personality and her ongoing lovestory with Daisuke. Umon asks her to assist him in the first tentative to lower Daisuke's pain, and she is not scared or embarrassed, even if she is, of course, worried.

For more, she is able to block Daisuke’s unconscious movements by herself, showing an incredible physical strengthens (I repeat, unrelated to the blood transfusion), which explains why later she won’t need any particular training to drive the Spacers (personal note: these are the original “crossed references” between episodes...). Episode 30 ends with Daisuke driving his motorbike just after knowing his death sentence.

We are not shown the moment when he communicates the terrible news to Hikaru, but, for sure, it happens immediately after, as she knows already the truth in the following real episode - ep32 (in my opinion, ep31 is only a trick to pay the due tribute to Toei money which was intended to be used for the “third chapter of Mazinger saga”, plus to let Banta character exiting in silence in order to cancel the last reference to the “anime for kids” still around). The poisoning injury is what stays behind whole Daisuke’s character evolution throughout all episodes from now to the end, but in reality it is going to affect also Hikaru’s personality and their relationship as well. The new deal is still there alive and kicking, but now it should need a “little” further re-negotiation...

HIKARU: THE RENEGOTIATIONS (EPISODES 32-36)

After ep30, Grendizer anime concentrates its plots for some episodes mainly on the poisoning injury storyline (eps 32-33-36), but with some remarkable sub-plots. We can see here and there some very interesting changes in Hikaru’s personality, which are necessary in order to let the writers develop in a correct way the “big-bang” of her soon coming new role.
Ep32 is a family-centred episode, and the first real hint about Duke Fleed’s family, plus the first plot about the soon coming spacers. Without analysing it deeply, I think it’s interesting to notice that, as I remarked previously, Hikaru knows about Daisuke’s injury as they exit together at the end of the episode from the Research Centre after he has been “cured” following the battle. And please note that they are chatting when they reach the main door and Goro arrives with his new drawing. It’s a brief moment, but it’s designed clearly.

So, once again, even if we are not shown anything explicitly which can “confirm” us the lovestory (a kiss, a proposal, something “classical” I mean), we can see Daisuke and Hikaru acting as they love each other. The look they are exchanging exiting the Centre lasts a fraction of second but it is there, it’s designed and we cannot ignore it.
